Unlikely as it may seem, Pomeranians (or “poms”) are almost certainly descended from Arctic sled draft dogs and are probably related to the Keeshond, Norwegian Alkhound, and Samoyed. This small companion dog was intentionally bred by progressively reducing their size, although when they arrived in the UK with the German-born Queen Charlotte, they were very different from the Poms we know today: they were white and much larger (9- 14kg). They soon became popular, especially with royalty, so when Queen Victoria visited Florence and saw several much smaller breeds, she took them home with her. The Queen herself kept breeding them and exhibited them at Crufts in 1891, where she (no wonder) she won Best of Breed. In the years following her death in 1901, she continued selective breeding for a smaller size until the diminutive dog we know today was developed and larger sizes disappeared from the UK altogether.
